What stump grinding actually is
Stump grinding is the process of using a specialized rotating wheel with carbide teeth to pulverize a tree stump into wood chips, grinding it down below the soil surface. The grinding wheel spins at high speed and cuts through the wood and root system, turning solid timber into mulch that sits where the stump was.
The depth I grind to depends on your plans for the spot. If you want to plant a new tree or shrub, I'll go deep enough that the roots have room. If you're laying sod or paving, I grind it low so the new surface sits flush with the surrounding grade. The chips stay on site unless you ask me to haul them away, and they make decent mulch for garden beds or landscaping.
This is different from stump removal, where the entire stump and major roots are dug out and hauled away. Grinding leaves the deeper root system in the ground, where it will decay naturally over time and improve soil structure.

When to do stump grinding?
I can grind a stump any time the ground is not waterlogged or frozen solid. Summer works well too, though dry ground creates more dust, and I'll water the area before I start to manage that. Winter is possible if the ground is frozen hard, but a thaw in the middle of the season can make the site muddy and difficult to access.

How I work in Doon
The process starts with a phone call or a message. Tell me where the stump is, roughly how wide it is, and whether there are obstacles nearby like fences, utilities, or parked cars. I'll come out and look at it in person, assess the site, and give you a free estimate on the spot. That visit takes me a few minutes, and I'll explain what I see and what the job will involve.
On the day of the work, I arrive with my grinding equipment, which is a self-propelled machine with a rotating cutting wheel. I position it over the stump, lower the wheel, and begin grinding. The machine grinds the stump down in passes, moving across the top and working down until the stump is below grade. Chips fly out into a pile beside the machine, and I keep grinding until the spot is level with the surrounding soil or slightly below it, depending on your needs.
Once the grinding is done, I move the larger chips away from the immediate area so the site looks clean. If you want me to haul all the chips away, I can do that. If you'd rather keep them for mulch in a garden bed, I'll pile them neatly to one side. The ground where the stump was is now ready for replanting, sod, paving or whatever you have planned.

The situations I run into
Fresh stumps from a recent removal. These are the easiest to grind because the wood is still solid and the machine cuts through quickly. If you had a tree taken down and the crew left the stump, I can come in and finish the job.
Old stumps that have been sitting for years. These are common. The outer wood may be soft or rotted, but the interior is usually still solid enough to grind. I adjust the grinding depth and technique based on what I find.
Stumps with multiple trunks or complex root systems. Trees that split into several stems or grew at an angle sometimes leave stumps that are irregular in shape. I grind them all the way down to below grade so the entire root crown is gone.
Stumps in tight spaces. If the stump is close to a fence, a deck, or a building, I assess whether my machine can fit and work safely. Some tight spots require careful positioning, but most residential stumps are accessible. If the space is too confined, I'll tell you that upfront.
Stumps left behind by another contractor. If someone else removed a tree and didn't grind the stump, or if the stump was never dealt with after storm damage, I can grind it just as well. These jobs are straightforward because there's no question about what needs to happen.
