When a tree develops a split union or a cracked scaffold limb, you do not always have to remove it. I can often save it by fitting a flexible cable between the leaders, and sometimes a brace lower down the trunk to stabilize the weak point. The emerald ash borer came through the Kitchener area years ago, and most of the ash trees that stood in its path are already gone. What remains is usually dead or nearly dead, and a dead ash becomes brittle fast.
